Proddatur is a town and a municipality in Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh state of southern India. Proddatur is mostly known for the trade of gold which occurs through this place. After Bombay, in India, this place is supposed to have the highest transaction of gold in the country[citation needed]. Also it is a known base for some major chemical and cement industries like Zuari, ICL and the like.

Proddatur is also famous for Dussera Celebrations, and for this reason it is often referred to as "Second Mysore".

Proddatur is located at 14.73° N 78.55° E. It has an average elevation of 155 metres (508 feet).

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Proddatur had a population of 164,932. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Proddatur has an average literacy rate of 64%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 73%, and female literacy is 54%. In Proddatur, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Joan Brown, a figurative expressionist and one of the major abstract painters of the late 20th century, died (falling from a scaffold while painting a mural) in 1990 while doing an installation in Proddatur, India.

  • Sivalayam Temple--
  • KANYAKA PARMESWARI AALAYAM (Ammavari Shala)--Sankara, has sent down a small flow of water from his rounded plaits(Jatas) where he had stored the holy Ganga , to this holy town of “BHRADHNAPURI” which later on is being called Proddatur meaning almost the same in Telugu.Bradhna is the Sanskrit form for Proddu in Telugu which means Surya.
  • Ayyappaswamy Temple, it is located near penna river
  • Rameswaram Temple--One of the historical place. Load Rama as prepared 7 Siva lingas while going in search of Sitha. One of the siva linga was prepared in proddatur Rameswaram temple (also called Mukthi Rameswaram).And also there is a saying that the people who visit Kasi should visit Rameswaram in proddatur to complete there Kasi journey.One of the old temple in proddatur.
  • Sai Baba Temple--There are two sai baba temple is proddatur one in rameswaram road and another in Y.M.R colony
  • Lord Venkateswara temple--It is located in Bollavaram on the way to Jammalamadugu.
  • Nookalola Gudi - In this temple Rajarajeswari devi and Lord Venkateswara are the dieties. This temple was known as Nookalola (family name of the key person/devotee involved) gudi.
