Naidu rejects YSR invitation for Sakshi launch

The Telugu Desam president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, has turned down an invitation from the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, to attend the launch of Saakshi, a Telugu daily being brought out by his son, Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy.

Dr Reddy had called up Naidu to find out whether he was willing to attend the function scheduled for March 23. The TD leader initially sought more time to consult his colleagues. On Thursday evening, Naidu got another call from the Chief Minister when he was in Rajahmundry to attend a programme.

The TD chief then told Dr Reddy straightaway that he could not attend the launch. “Naidu told me that he would not like to participate in the function,” said the Chief Minister. “It seems his party men had advised him not to participate. Anyway, it is up to him.”

The TD has already initiated a campaign against Saakshi by alleging that the Rs 600 crore invested in the newspaper included diversions from public funds and bribes given by Jalayagnam contractors to the Chief Minister. TD leaders also said that sole purpose of Saakshi was to malign opposition parties “The management of Saakshi daily wanted to prove that it is impartial and not biased,” said a TD source. “That is the reason they wanted to invite our leader.”

In fact, the Chief Minister has been ringing up leaders of various political parties to find out whether they were willing to attend the launch of the daily. He explained to each leader his son’s new venture and told them that Jaganmohan Reddy would personally invite them if they agreed to take part.

Most leaders willingly agreed. But not Naidu. Those likely to attend the function include the TRS chief, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, B.V. Raghavulu of the CPM, the CPI state secretary, K. Narayana, and the BJP state chief, Bandaru Dattatreya
